Audrey and Pertussis

As many know, we are in the hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of pertussis with Audrey. Her cough began about 2 weeks ago. I took her to the doctor last Tuesday with only a dry night cough. Treated Audrey for allergies because that is what Emily Jo is getting treated with on her cough from 4-6 weeks ago after breathing treatments didn't work. Of course, Audrey's cough quickly accelerated into 10-12 attacks a day with apnea spells so we went back Monday to get tested for pneumonia and pertussis. Learned Tuesday it was positive WHILE already in the ER getting admitted. I had enough of the apnea spells and wanted her observed!

Needless to say, I've had the girls to the doctor many of times over a "cough" with NO fever our fair share these last few months. Even Seph and me have struggled with coughs and chalked it up to allergies! Come to find out, most likely all of us have had whooping cough according to doctors here.

There's been an outbreak in KS this year, vaccines are not 100%. Anyone who has been around us who are elderly, infant or immune compromised is advised to consult their doctor to see their recommendation on getting a booster or prophylactic treatment.

We will remain in the hospital (in isolation mind you) until Audrey is episode free for 24hours. To give you an idea, we have had I think 8-10 cough fits and 3 apnea episodes since we've been in the room at 3pm Tuesday. Everyone's thoughts and prayers are appreciated for a short stay!!! Some kiddos are in for weeks (yikes)!!!
